Born the 11th of 14 children in Bonito Italy in 1898, Salvatore Ferragamo, the “shoemaker to the stars found his calling at an early age and apprenticed to a shoemaker in Naples when he was only nine years old . He immigrated to Boston Massachusetts when he was 14 where he worked with one among his brothers in a cowboy boot factory. He moved to California shortly thereafter and it was here that Ferragamo found success. He initially opened a shop for repair and made-to-measure shoes which soon became popular among the celebrity class and eventually led to a job designing footwear for the cinema. In 1927 after 13 years in the United States Ferragamo returned to Italy and settled in Florence. It was at this time Ferragamo began to fashion shoes for the wealthiest and most powerful women of the century. Though Ferragamo passed away in 1960 the Ferragamo company has remained in family hands and has expanded its operations to incorporate luxury shoes, bags, eyewear, silk accessories, watches, a ready-to-wear clothing line and perfumes.
