Salvatore Ferragamo’s iconic Vara pump—known for its boxy low-heel and grosgrain bow garnish—is celebrating a birthday with a comeback.
Since its creation in 1978 the shoe has never left the feet of well-heeled women, and 35 years later the Vara is having a really modern moment. The revival can partly be sourced to the Italian brand’s new online project, L’Icona. Starting this month, visit Ferragamo.com to design your personal pair (or its sole sister the Varina ballet flat). Pick everything from the material to the color combination to the hardware—even credit your creation with monogrammed plates.
While the iconic bow-bearing shoe historically veers classic, a chic campaign shot by fine art photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank features the Vara styled on a wide range of today’s most-touted tastemakers from interior designer Asia Baker to film director Chiara Clemente.
What colors would you click-together? Contrasting shades like Lava and Citron or something congruent like Bisque heel-to-toe?
